Air Sealing and Weatherstripping Services

Caulking Services for PhiladelphiaWeatherstripping and air sealing is the most inexpensive and effective way to conserve energy in most homes built before 1995.

Did you know that the combined leakage around doors, windows, utility penetrations, attic hatches and other holes in the air barrier of the typical American home equates to an opening three feet wide and four feet tall? That is the equivalent of leaving an average sized window wide open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.

Poor weatherstripping can cost you money.

The picture to the left is a thermographic image we took during an energy audit in Southhampton, PA. The homeowner stands in front of a new double-paned window that actually appears to be insulating better than the wall above and to the left of it. You can see the cold air, however, entering the house around the outside of the actual window. Regardless of the quality or U-Value of the windows, without proper sealing, their effectiveness is limited.

By using a blower door during our weatherstripping and air sealing treatment, we are better able to locate air leaks and quantify both the original degree of airtightness and the actual amount of improvement. We will ensure the building maintains an adequate amount of ventilation, as oversealing can lead to inappropriate pressure differentials within the home, potentially causing life threatening levels of carbon monoxide, moisture, and soil gases in the air.

air sealing and weatherstrippingSince we only use top-quality weatherstripping and sealing materials, our treatment will provide several years of energy efficiency to your home or building. Our service includes appropriate weatherstripping on all needy windows and doors (including attic and unconditioned basement access) in addition to caulk or foam sealing where appropriate.

Not only is preventing air leakage often the most inexpensive way to improve your home's energy efficiency, it almost always offers the greatest ratio of return on investment. A complete weatherstripping and sealing treatment for a typical home will usually cost less than $400, depending upon the degree of leakiness and number of windows and doors.
